An Insight Into Vedic Astrology

In India, astrological predictions are largely based on the principles of Hindu astrology. This field of knowledge is ancient; it has existed since Vedic times. In fact, Jyotish Vidya, the science of light, has been referred in our Vedas as well. It is all about the celestial and astral patterns, which define an individual’s fate. This is the basis of Vedic Astrology. It states that all things in this Universe and beyond are interlinked. An individual’s fate is determined by his karma. It rules his past, present, and future and runs in a cyclic form. A person’s body is only an incarnation; the soul keeps on travelling from one body to the next in different births at different times, and places. Our birth on this planet is similar to the blooming of a flower. It is season-bound, time-bound and pertains to the most suitable conditions.

What Is The Role Of Natal Chart In Vedic Astrology?

In Jyotish Vidya, a person’s natal chart is the primary consideration. It’s like a map which guides the astrologer through the individual’s zodiac. The natal chart is based on the exact time of the person’s birth. It is, however, irrespective of the time of conceiving. The calculations are performed as per the position of the planets at the time. These positions define a person’s ‘dasha’ or the dynamic timeline through which he would travel. The houses, planets, and zodiac signs in your natal chart show the events that are going to happen, and your dasha tells when they are going to happen. In Vedic astrology, individuals are not seen merely as sun signs. The natal chart is studied beginning with the ‘ascendent,’ which is the rising constellation on the Earth’s horizon at the moment of a person’s birth. This also determines his bond with the other planets and personality

How Does Vedic Astrology Differ From Western Astrology?

While Western astrology follows the position of the sun, Vedic astrology is all about the stars. The former was developed 2000-3000 years ago by the Greeks. According to Western astrology, the Sun, which is the centre of the solar system, shares the deepest bond with planet Earth. This ball of fire influences Earth’s Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn, which in turn, influences the lives of those living on it. This is why Western astrology is also known as Tropical astrology. This branch of astrology believes a new year begins on or around March 22nd. This day marks the onset of Spring and also the Vernal Equinox, the day in which, day and night last for the same duration. It was during the rule of the Romans that January 1st was declared the beginning of the new year. However, it does not have any importance in astrology. In fact, Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, is placed during the time of Vernal Equinox, followed by the other signs.

Vedic astrology is different and older. This 5000 years old science does not mark any sign as the first sign or talk about how to begin or end counting the twelve zodiacs. Instead, this science is based more on the sidereal zodiac, i.e, the fixed stars or constellations, which help in the calculation of the planetary movements. Vedic astrology does not study the Earth’s relationship with the Sun. It says this could lead to inaccuracies due to the dynamic equinoxes. Instead, it talks about ‘Ayanamsha’ – Earth’s rotation on its axis over the years. Every year, the equinoxes move ahead by almost a minute due to the planet’s continuous wobbling. Thus, in every 72 years, an entire day is lost in Earth’s revolution. The twelve zodiac signs have to adjust to this and step back by a day to help predictions make more sense. In Vedic astrology, there is room for adjusting these changes. Of course, it is always ‘to each his own.’

How Important Is It To Believe in Vedic Astrology?

Vedic astrology is armoured with concrete knowledge and time-tested techniques. It is a highly developed form of astrology, which encompasses continuous evolution to comply with the changing world. It is just like mathematics. You don’t have to ‘believe’ in it to measure things. It is just there and it always will be. Of course, if you put your best foot forward to get the hang of it, you’d definitely invite knowledge and wisdom in your life.
